Rising Tensions: Analysing the India-Pakistan Conflict of 2025

By Dr Burhan | 26th April 2025

📰 The Spark: Deadly Attack in Kashmir

In April 2025, a brutal terrorist attack in the picturesque valley of Pahalgam, located in Indian-administered Kashmir, shook the region and reverberated across the subcontinent. The attack claimed the lives of 26 Hindu tourists and injured more than 20 others.

India, with No Specific evidence pointing toward cross-border terrorist support, directly accused Pakistan of harbouring and facilitating terror networks. This marked the beginning of one of the most serious diplomatic breakdowns between the two nuclear-armed neighbours in recent years.

🛑 Diplomatic Fallout: Borders, Waters & Words

India's response was swift and strategic:

  • Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, threatening water flow to Pakistan

  • Revocation of visas and expulsion of Pakistani nationals and diplomats

  • Closure of the Attari-Wagah border crossing

  • Complete suspension of bilateral trade

  • Withdrawal from diplomatic missions in Islamabad

Pakistan countered by:

  • Expelling Indian diplomats

  • Closing its airspace to Indian aircraft

  • Canceling all Indian visas

  • Terminating the Shimla Agreement

  • Fully halting trade and cultural exchanges

These tit-for-tat moves have effectively collapsed all formal dialogue channels between the two nations, increasing the risk of miscalculation.

🔥 Line of Control: The Hot Frontier

Since the diplomatic fallout, border skirmishes along the Line of Control (LoC) have intensified. Reports indicate troop build-ups, artillery exchanges, and aerial drone activity. This fragile ceasefire zone is now teetering on the edge of open confrontation.

🌐 Global Reactions: Calls for Restraint

International leaders and organisations, including the United Nations, China, the United States, and Russia, have urged both nations to exercise restraint and re-establish diplomatic communication.

The concern is not only regional. A full-scale conflict between two nuclear powers in South Asia could disrupt global security, economic stability, and humanitarian conditions across the continent.

🧠 Strategic Analysis: What’s at Stake?

This conflict transcends a single event. The Kashmir dispute, deep-rooted historical grievances, and rising nationalism on both sides have made peace incredibly fragile.

If diplomacy fails:

  • Economic isolation will further damage already struggling economies.

  • Regional alliances may be tested, drawing in third-party states.

  • Nuclear deterrence becomes a dangerous game of brinkmanship's.

🕊️ The Path Forward

While the situation remains critical, history shows that even bitter rivals can find paths to dialogue when under the pressure of global scrutiny and domestic instability. Mediation, perhaps under the UN, OIC, or neutral states like Switzerland or Norway, might offer a glimmer of hope.
